Easy Things Made Hard

In January 2011,  I officially opened FireHouse Fitness as a way to help people lose weight and keep it off for life.

In my bootcamps, I use my old tractor tires for platforms. We jump on them, lunge on them, and other things, too. There are three of them, a 450lb tire called "Pinky",  a 650lb tire called "Big Ben", and a 850lb tire called "Margaret". 

I love staying connected to how my boot campers feel in class. So much so that lately I've traded my strength workouts for the trimming and toning workouts of my FireHouse Fitness bootcamps. As a result of not staying on top of my strength training (lifting heavy weights) I lost my ability to flip Margaret (the 850lbs tire). It took a lot of hard work to get up to the point where I could flip Margaret.  Because of this, it started to bug me that I had to ask for help from other people to flip the massive tire but it is more important to me to stay connected to my members at FireHouse Fitness.

As the months passed it got harder and harder to deal with Margaret. And then it happened! As I was  cleaning up an obstacle course I made for my daughters 9th birthday party, I called my wife over to help me flip Margaret. I thought even if she could just take a 100lbs off I could flip it. So I called out "On three lift! 1, 2, 3 – LIFT!" We flipped the tire with no problem.  Then I hear my wife say "Wait, I was not ready". What I realized in that moment is that I hadn't really lost any of my strength over the last few months!

So this is what actually happened. I discovered a belief in my mind that was passed down from my trainers. "If I didn't keep up my Strongman Training then I could lose it fast… and it would take months to get it back. So I did what any good student would do – I listened to what they told me and made their beliefs my own. After this realization, I took it a step further and asked myself "What else in my life am I making harder by simply believing it's hard?". After a lot of thinking, (I mean a LOT of thinking) I came to realize that I have been making a lot of things harder then they needed to be! There were things as little as doing the dishes to improving my relationships. So I set out to find solutions to all of my "so-called" hard situations and what I found is that with little or no effort I could change my life for the better!

 


So here is the challenge for you take a good look at your fitness and nutrition programs. Find things that you have been lead to believe "MUST BE HARD" and change that perspective. Fix what you can. Most of the time (like my Margaret) it's just more or less the way I perceived it to be. This is not a challenge for the timid. It takes some serious self reflection, however, I know you can do it! Save yourself some time, pain, and lack of progress and actually end up dominating your fitness and nutrition with this simple tool.  Get the results you're working so hard for!
